Helpful Hints:
When hosting a party, I always want to know how many beverages to buy. The thought that a guest should be left wanting for something runs completely against the “have food and drinks for an army” mentality that my mother raised me with! First, make sure you know how many adults and children you will be serving. General guidelines for a two hour party:

Wine - Estimate one bottle of wine for every two guests at a two hour cocktail party. If serving both red and white wines, you should have twice as many bottles of white as red, unless you know specifically that your guests are red wine drinkers.

Beer - Plan on two bottles or servings of beer per person for the first hour, and another one for each subsequent hour of your party.

Spirits and Mixers - One 750 ml. bottle of spirits will serve 17 drinks. Plan on 3 drinks per person during a two hour cocktail party. The amount of mixers you will need depends on the type of cocktail you plan to serve. Look at your cocktail recipes and multiply the volume of mixer ingredients needed per cocktail by three, per person, for a two hour party.

Water - At a cocktail party, one liter of water will serve four guests. At a sit down meal, plan on serving three guests from each liter.

Soft Drinks and Juices - At a party where other beverages, such as wine, beer, and cocktails will be served, plan on one 8-oz. glass per person. If there are children at your party, you'll need to increase that amount by 3 drinks per child. If non-alcoholic drinks will be the only beverages served, plan on 3 per guest, adults and children.

Next to knowing how many beverages to buy, I also want to know how cold they should be for optimal taste while consuming.  Here are a couple guidelines for you.

Wine - All white wines generally need to be kept cool, but the varieties and flavors can influence what temperature. Sparkling and sweeter wines should be stored very cold, anywhere between 35 and 45 degrees, while drier wines should be stored at around 55 degrees.

Beer - Most domestic beers are best when served very cold and should be stored below 40 degrees. Pale ales should be kept a little warmer,
but not exceed 42 degrees. Imports are much more flavorful and are best enjoyed at warmer temperatures, roughly around 50 degrees.

Spirits and Mixers - Since alcohol does not freeze, there are no temperature requirements with the exception of spirits that contain dairy products, which should be stored cold to prevent spoiling. The temperature of liquor is all a matter of personal preference.

Water – Water is a basic beverage and temperature is all up to personal preference.

Soft Drinks – Soft drinks are best consumed at temperatures ranging from 38-42 degrees.
